Don't worry, my 8 inch long pets won't hurt you. Everyone says vampire bats are mean, ugly creatures and that they will attack people. This is not true. Vampire bats will find the most convenient victim usually a horse or cow. All mammals can carry rabies, so if you are attacked by a vampire bat you should see a physician.

Vampire bats have sharp incisors which they use to slit the victims skin. There are sensors in the vampire bats nose that locate a vein close to the skin. The bats meal lasts 15 to 20 minutes. There is a substance in its saliva to keep the victim's blood from clotting. |

Vampire bats will risk their own lives to feed a roost mate by regurgitating blood into the other bat's mouth. If a vampire bat doesn't eat for 2 days it will die. Vampire bats will adopt orphaned babies. |

Did you know that vampire bats walk? Once they find a victim they land near it and walk like an ape up to it.. If a vampire bat drinks too much blood, it can't fly. Can you imagine seeing a bat waddling home? |

A vampire bat usually drinks 2 tablespoons of blood a night, but they can drink more than their body weight. The vampire bat weighs about 1 oz., so 2 tablespoons is a lot of blood. They need so much blood because blood is mostly water and is low in nutrients. |
