Did you know that there are over 30,000 species of plants in the tropical rain forest? Different plants grow in the four main layers of the rain forest. Some of the trees, called emergents can get up to 200 ft. tall! They are located in the top layer, called the "Emergent Layer". Directly below the Emergent Layer is the "Canopy". The Canopy is made of leaves on trees that are between 130 and 164 ft. tall. Below the Canopy is the "Understory". The Understory consists of somewhat small, young trees. The lowest layer is the "Forest Floor". It is dark here because of the many layers above it. Very little grows here. It is always covered with leaves, twigs, flowers, animal remains, and droppings. There are also many medicines and other products made from rain forest plants.
