Instructions:
Read the story below. Then begin your journey by correctly answering the questions as you travel up the volcano. At each marker try to answer each question correctly so you can give Madam Pele an offering and save your village. If you answer the questions wrong, Madam Pele will get angry and destroy your village by sending lava over it.
Before you begin please read, How Our Hawaiian Islands Were Formed.
Sitting quietly below the volcano, Kilauea, is a small village. The people of this village spend their entire day playing games and having fun. Because the villagers spend all their time playing, very little time is spent studying and learning about the islands they live on.
Madame Pele, the Hawaiian Goddess of Fire, is angry because she wants the people of this village to be akamai (smart) and learn the true way the islands were formed. As punishment, Pele decides to destroy the village by sending lava over the village. Just as Pele was about to start the lava flow, she had a change of heart. She decides to give the village another chance. So she places a dream inside the head of the ruler of this village, Chief Kawika.
As Chief Kawika is sleeping, he dreams of lava slowly flowing towards his village causing total destruction of everything in its path. As the chief dreams, he sees a female face within the lava. Realizing that it is the face of Pele, Chief Kawika awakens from his nightmare and quickly calls in the kahuna (priest) to help him figure out what this dream means.
The kahuna tells Chief Kawika that Pele is angry because the people have not learned about the islands they live on. To make Pele happy again, you must send a couple of villagers to the top of Kilauea Crater with a ho'okupu (gift) to give to Pele. This journey will not be easy because as these two brave people climb to the top, there will be markers with questions based on their knowledge of Hawaiian island geology. If the villagers are correct, they can continue up the volcano without any consequence. If they are wrong, Pele will slowly send lava towards the village.
After listening to what the kahuna said, Chief Kawika called all the villagers together and asked for volunteers to bring the ho'okupu (offering) to Pele and save the village.
Quickly Kalalau raised a hand saying, "I would like to volunteer!"
The chief waited for another volunteer but nobody raised their hand.
After much thought, Lani slowly raised her hand saying, "I too, would like to be part of this journey to save our village."
Together, the two brave villagers hiked towards Kilauea volcano as everyone in the village wished them good luck and waved good-bye.
