BARRIER REEFS
    Barrier  reefs  grow  parallel  to  land  but  are   separated  from shoreline  by  a  larger  area  of  calm  water  called  a  lagoon. They  act  as  a  barrier  between  the   lagoon  and the waters of the open sea.
 
The  best  known  barrier reef is the Great Barrier reef.
It stretches 1,257 (one thousand two hundred fifty seven) miles and parts of it lie over 100 miles from the shore line.
The Great Barrier Reef is located off the northeastern coast of Australia.
The Great Barrier reef is made up of smaller reefs.
