Father of the Iditarod

Joe Redington Sr.is known as the "Father of the Iditarod", because he and Dorothy Page thought of the idea for the race over 20 years ago. Joe has done more to bring the sled dog back from the brink of extinction than any other person in the sport. Redington is a legend in Alaska.

Like most longtime Iditarod racers, Joe has a lot of stories about moose, open water, and adventures along the trail. He has also taken a dog team to the summit of Denali. Every kennel in Alaska can trace at least one of their dogs back to a Redington dog, and nearly every musher in the race today at one time spoke with or learned something from him. Joe Redington is 76 years old.
