Molly Pitcher was born on October 13, 1754. Her real name was Mary McCauley. Molly became famous for carrying pitchers of water to the soldiers in the Revolutionary War.(That is how she got the name "Pitcher".) Her first husband, John Hays, was a person who fired canons. Molly met John Hays when he was wounded or overcome by heat. Molly went over to John and applied a cold cloth to his head. Molly then put John in the shade and took his job at firing the cannons. Soon after Molly fell to the ground exhausted. Soldiers soon realized what Molly had done and cheered for her accomplishment.
After the the war Molly was married to John. They went on to the Carlisle War where John died. A few years after John Hays death Molly met John McCauley, also a Revolutionary war veteran. They were soon married.
Thirty years later, in 1882, Pennsylvania honored Molly's achievements by giving her forty dollars and a pension of ten dollars for the rest of her life.
Molly Pitcher died in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, January 22, 1832.
