She was born in either Eresos or Mytilene on the Greek island of Lesbos. Her husband was named Cercylas. She was the greatest of the early Greek lyric poets. She was orphaned at the age six. Her father was named Skamandronymous. Her eldest brother was named Charaxos, another brother was named Larichos. Sappho had a daughter, Clies, Lesbos then, who was a brilliant cultural center with strong poetic tradition.
Sappho wrote her poetry for her circle of friends and disciples. In the third and second centuries B.C., Aristophanes of Byzantium and Arirstarchus of Samothrace collected and edited Sappho's poetry in 9 books. By the fifth century A.D, when scholars began to transcribe words from papyrus scrolls to books, Sappho's poetry was left out and forgotten. The first modern collection of Sappho's poetry was published in 1925 by the Oxford University Press. Of Sappho's nine books, only fragments survived.
