Jennifer
Azzi
1968-Present
- Jennifer Azzi is used to
being a winner. She has been playing basketball for nearly her
entire life, and she continues to be successful.
-
- She grew up in Tennessee.
During her high school career she played on a team that did not
know the word defeat...they never lost. All through her senior
year people were waiting to see where she would choose to go to
college. Many schools wanted her for her abilities as an athlete
and her academic skills. People expected her to go to a school in
Tennessee, they had a strong basketball program and a winning
record. She shocked a lot of people in the business when she
decided to attend Stanford. They had been recruiting her hard.
They needed her abilities as a point guard. Stanford's women's
basketball team was not strong. They lacked talent in areas on the
court and needed some fresh players. It was difficult for Jennifer
at first to be at Stanford. She was used to winning...always, and
now she was on a team that rarely saw a victory.
-
- She was determined to not let
up and to help the team grow. Along with several new recruits the
team began to win. Over the next four years Stanford went from
last to best. In the 1989-1990 season the Stanford Cardinals took
there team to the Pac-10 championships and shocked the world with
a win. During this time Jennifer won several awards including Most
Valuable Player of the NCAA Final Four.
-
- After college she went to
Sweden so she could continue to play the sport she loved. She was
there for five seasons from 1993-1995. She came home in 1995 and
became a member of the U.S. National Team. In 1996 she and the
rest of the National Team headed for the Olympics. They brought
home the gold.
-
- Azzi is now playing in the
American Basketball League (ABL), the first professional league
for women that was formed in the USA. She is an important player
on the San Jose Lasers.
